Economics Forecasting Metals Returns a Bayesian Decision
نویسنده
چکیده
Turning points in commodity returns are important for decisions of policy makers, commodity producers and consumers reliant on medium term outcomes. However, forecasting of turning points has been a neglected feature of forecasting, especially in commodity markets. I forecast turning points in metals price returns using Bayesian Decision Theory. The method produces a probabilistic statement about our belief of a turning point occurring in the next period which, combined with a decision rule based on a loss function generates optimal turning point forecasts. This method produces positive results in forecasting turning points in metals returns, with the simple linear models investigated producing more accurate turning point forecasts than naive models across a number of different evaluation methods for the general case and for the specific example of a producing firm. 1 This paper is on my honours dissertation which was supported by the BHP Billiton Honours Scholarship. I would like to thank Kenneth Clements for his supervision and helpful comments. متن کاملThe Stock Returns Volatility based on the GARCH (1,1) Model: The Superiority of the Truncated Standard Normal Distribution in Forecasting Volatility
I n this paper, we specify that the GARCH(1,1) model has strong forecasting volatility and its usage under the truncated standard normal distribution (TSND) is more suitable than when it is under the normal and student-t distributions. On the contrary, no comparison was tried between the forecasting performance of volatility of the daily return series using the multi-step ahead forec...
متن کاملForecasting of heavy metals concentration in groundwater resources of Asadabad plain using artificial neural network approach
Nowadays 90% of the required water of Iran is secured with groundwater resources and forecasting of pollutants content in these resources is vital. Therefore, this research aimed to develop and employ the feedforward artificial neural network (ANN) to forecast the arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) concentration in groundwater resources of Asadabad plain. In this research, the ANN models we...
